A strip of land in the centre of the High Street has now been officially transferred into the ownership of New Romney Town Council. A package was negotiated with the donor of the land who ‘gifted’ the land to the people of New Romney and absorbed all parties legal fees. Therefore, due to the generosity of Goodlife Estates Ltd, we have, without cost to residents, now added to the Town’s assets.
For several months the Council has worked on planning and developing the site to ensure it will provide residents and visitors to our town with an aesthetically pleasing seated amenity area within the Town's trading centre.
To that end the Council approached several potential sponsors to help us achieve our goal. We have now received nearly £17,000 from the following sponsors:
Terswins, a local contractor re-paved the area and has provided an excellent standard of workmanship and service ensuring the work caused minimal disruption to the adjacent traders.
All new furniture will be in the Town’s colours of black and gold and will incorporate either the Cinque Ports crest or the Town Crest. We have ordered high quality, aesthetically appealing items. To highlight the important heritage status of our town, we have renamed the area ‘Cinque Port Place’ and have incorporated appropriate signage into the end design.
Longer term, the Council hopes to attract sponsorship for a central ‘Art’ feature such as a mosaic on the site and possibly some new bollards incorporating flower baskets or cycle brackets.
Cllr Patricia Rolfe the co-ordinator of the Project adds: “Both visitors and residents will hopefully benefit from the enhanced new area. It is hoped that this will herald the start of a longer term High Street uplift programme of improvements within our Town.”
An official opening may be planned for later in the year.
Any individual or business who may be interested in sponsoring an item of amenity furniture e.g. bin, bench or planter should contact the Town Clerk – Mrs Valerie Tully on 01797 362348 for further information.
